Themes

Love

The Third Party shows how love can happen at any time, through vulnerability, chance or pain. Tola and Seline love wasn't planned or born of charm or seduction but instead it happened in a moment of raw vulnerability.

Second chances

The film reveals that love, trust and life don't usually go perfectly the first time but that doesn't mean it is over. The film explores how everyone deserves a second chance, whether it's Tola learning to open up emotionally or Seline giving love another try.

Silence and Communication

The story highlights how silence in relationships can be as destructive as lies, Lola doesn't express her resentment toward Tola and Seline’s relationship. Instead she acts on it silently, which bridged a wall of hidden hurt and hatred.

Vulnerability and Masculinity

Tola's asthma attack breaks the wall of traditional masculinity, which is deep rooted in the psyche of most Nigerian men. The film shows that vulnerability isn't something to be embarrassed and ashamed of but a doorway to intimacy, healing and growth.

These beautiful themes explain the complexities of modern Nigerian relationships. It is very relatable to the Nigerian audience navigating modern love, identity and ambition.

Omoni Oboli delivers a subtle masterpiece with The Third Party, Chike Daniel brings his character Tola to life, with depth and restraint. His facial expressions alone speak volumes that resonate with the audience and blurring the line between vulnerability and masculinity.

Stephanie Zibili portrays Seline in a beautiful manner, with grace and authenticity. While Moet Adebe brings fire to her role, adding mystery and depth to the story's tension.

The Third Party is not your typical Nigerian romantic film. It's thought provoking, insightful, mature and emotionally grounded. Although it isn't packed with super flashy scenery or plot twists, it offers viewers something deep and unique about love, timing and how life sometimes puts people in your life for a reason.

If you are a fan of romantic drama, The Third Party deserves a spot on your watchlist.
